VITAMIN & YOU
Class Three
B-COMPLEX

CURE432: I liked the article about Qo-10 I have been reading about it for
years, even my dog is on it

DTRCN: Thx, the Q10 and tocopherol articles where to add info to last week class
.
CURE432: I am interesedin what vitamins and mineral are good for a straght
back
DTRCN: I will try to cover what vit effects the bones make sure you read
about Vit D

How do they decide to research a vitamin? That is a question not
many people know.

DTRCN: The basis for research comes when a symptom has been shown to be
caused by a nutrient deficiency in several species of Lab Animals.
.
DTRCN: Then a "point" can be suggested to research the same problem in
human. However, only when that nutrient deficiency can be reproduced in humans
by deleting the nutrient in the diet and then "cured" by restoring it..........then
it can be claimed that the missing nutrient caused the "symptom" and completed
the cure.

The Problem: the symptoms of a nutrient deficiency may not show up
for years in humans. By then the problems may not be reversible.

BDeGraz: In "real" life what is the diet needed that we will get all our
required nutrients?

DTRCN: You have asked similar question and there is most likely in this day
and age "NO" diet, I feel, we can eat that will give us the nutrients needed
to protect our bodies from the daily stressors we face.
.
DTRCN: Now if we had NO smog, cigarettes, stress, disease, war, hunger, etc
just eating from the land might do it but who knows. the ADA food pyramid is a start. I think I had emailed some info on what food combinations and amounts can give at least the minimum nutrients
needed

BDeGraz: Why then do people live so long?
.
DTRCN: Well, all the dinosaurs are dead, war is only elsewhere, and disease
was on the run though that may be turning around also. Our ancestors did not have our
knowledge about what to eat and they did not have the plethora of food available that we do
now. NOR, did they have the high tech diseases we are plagued with.

BDeGraz: Why can't Vit E be taken with Coumdin?

Ok you are talking about Vit E and Coumadin?
DTRCN: Was this from Class?
ANSWER: Vit E may delay wound healing and cause bleeding..........yet later same text says
Vit E may contribute to blood clots. This is contradictory and I am checking other sources.
It seems from the text that this "only" affects people with blood clotting problems. Not he says
"normal" people.

CURE432: what is counadin?

DTRCN: Coumadin is a blood thinning agent.

WATER SOLUBLE VITAMINS

DTRCN: THIAMIN = B1

DTRCN: HISTORY: Beri Beri is the disease state associated with B1 and was recorded
in Chinese records from 2600bc. In 1860, the problem was solved in Japan when they
found feeding people with signs of Beri Beri unmilled rather than milled white rice made the disease
symptoms disappear and normal health returned.
.
PROPERTIES: Thiamin helps in making co-enzyme TPP, which is a major
enzyme in Energy Production.
.
ABSORPTION: B1 is absorbed through the small intestine and does not
need a carrier to pass thru the intestinal wall, as oil solubles do. It is not stored
in the body and is water soluble.

DTRCN: FUNCTIONS:
.
DTRCN: 1) Formation of TPP an enzyme used in the Energy cycle of the body.

DTRCN: 2) B1 helps breakdown carbohydrates, fats, and protein for use in
the body.

DTRCN: 3) helps nerve transmission.

DTRCN: 4) B1 helps with tissue respiration by transporting oxygen to the
cells.

SOURCES: Rice and whole grains. The milling process destroys
thiamin and since WW2 companies "enrich" cerals/grains with the vitamins they have
destroyed.

DTRCN: TOXICITY: no known toxicity of B1
.
DTRCN: NOTE: Alcohol consumption quickly depletes Thiamin.

DTRCN: QUOTE: "If you dramatically reduce Thiamin intake, you reduce the
ability of the brain to use glucose." Glucose is the main energy producer in the brain which makes it
function. "And if you reduct that, you have impaired mental function"

DTRCN: This quote is from the Thiamine story article posted for your
reading. He goes on to say that a severe thiamine deficiency "kills brain cells responsible for
memory".
DTRCN: Gary Gibson, PhD, Cornell University

DTRCN: OHA = 10 - 50 mg RDA = 1-5 mg

BDeGraz: Why Then does the FDA make RDA'S so low?

.
DTRCN: Remember in class one, the quote was ........"they are for minimal
health"

this is by the RDA board.........the FDA does not regulate the RDA's
now they may influence the board that I do not know.

These amounts are what they have found in the body......of normal
healthy humans they have not really studied ill patients nutrients vs then well with supplementation
.
DTRCN: As you can see by the first statement about research, it is not easy
to even get them to consider nutrient research but it is getting better as more and
more people are turning to alternative therapies they are forced too.

BDeGraz: Do vitamins interact in the blood stream?

DTRCN: Most interaction is in the cells of the tissue......they are carried
by the blood stream so some interaction may take place but that is not the main area of
interaction.

RIBOFLAVIN = B2

DTRCN: HISTORY: B2 was recognized as the yellow-green fluorescent pigment
in milk whey. In 1933 it was noted that the amount of B2 in the body was
proportional to growth.

DTRCN: PROPERTIES: B2 is also absorbed thru the small intestinal wall.
However, take note, ONLY 15% is absorbed when taken alone while up to 60% can be
absorbed when taken with food.

DTRCN: FUNCTIONS:
.
DTRCN: 1) Riboflavin converts to coenzymes FMN and FAD (these are used in
the oxidation reduction process) which shows that there is a large possibility of B2 being
an antioxidant.
.
DTRCN: 2) B2 helps the body use fatty acids properly
.
DTRCN: 3) It helps activate B6 and Folic Acid to their coenzyme forms.

DTRCN: 4) B2 is necessary for energy production

DTRCN: 5) It is esssential for normal cell function.

DTRCN: SOURCES: Milk and milk products, green leafy veggies, liver,
kidney, and meats.

DTRCN: DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS OF B2:

DTRCN: Cheliosis = cracks at the corner of the mouth/nose
DTRCN: Dermatitis = dry skin and scaly skin
DTRCN: Glossitis = smooth tongue, inflammation of the membranes in the mouth
DTRCN: depression, hysteria, anemia
.
DTRCN: Early Sign = burning eyes, become reddened, sensitive to light,
tearing

DTRCN: TOXICITY: Very low
.
DTRCN: At high Risk again Alcoholics
.
DTRCN: Strenuous exercise can remove B2 from the body
.
DTRCN: OHA = 10 - 50 mg RDA = 1.7 mg

MDr100686: I just noticed that in my husband's vit. the b2 intake is only 30
mg and for me is 80mg Do women need more intake than men?
.
DTRCN: of certain vitamins women do need more and the B complex is one most
feel women need more of
.
DTRCN: Everyone has their own Supplementation program.

DTRCN: The one reason for this course is for you to learn the amounts and
reasons for taking supplements but there is NO correct formula for everyone........each
is different. In this way, you have the knowledge to create your formula that feels
best for you.

BDeGraz: Should ALL vitamins be taken with food?

DTRCN: there are a few exceptions.......and they are mainly minerals.
Mostly they give you the best results when taken with food.

DTRCN: Calcium is better taken a little before or after.

DTRCN: If something needs a high acid medium to be digested then with food is
when the stomach secretes high acid.
DTRCN: .
DTRCN: However, the blanket statement is to take spplements with meals which gives less confusion.

DTRCN: NIACIN = B3

DTRCN: HISTORY: Pellagra is the symptom associated with Niacin deficiency.
DTRCN: It was known as a "killer" in the southern states due to peoples
diets consisting mainly of corn. Then in the 1930's, they realized B3 stopped the problem.
.
DTRCN: PROPERTIES: Niacin is resistant to heat, light, air, acids and
alkalies so very little is destroyed by cooking or milling.
.
DTRCN: ABSORPTION: B3 is easily absorbed by the intestines. However,
Niacin from Grains are bound in a way that makes the vitamin unavailable for the body to
use.

DTRCN: FUNCTIONS:
.
DTRCN: NOTE: Niacin is active in more than 50 bodily functions
.
DTRCN: 1) B3 acts as a vasodilator by causing the arteries to contract,
hence better blood flow.
.
DTRCN: 2) Forms coenzymes NAD & NADP which are important in metabolism of
amino acids and fatty acids........(amino acids are the breakdown of
protein/meat)
.
DTRCN: 3) B3 helps control a continued energy supply to all cells
.
DTRCN: 4) B3 helps manufacture steroids needed in the body

DTRCN: 5) Niacin helps the body use drugs and toxicants .

DTRCN: 6) It can raise HDL (considered the good cholesterol) in some
people *some heart specialist are prescribing Niacin for their patients.

DTRCN: 7) It's percursor is the amino acid Tryptophan (niacin can be
synthesized from Tryptophan if needed by the body)
.
DTRCN: These are the main functions and research is adding more.
.
DTRCN: SOURCES: Brewer's yeast, peanut butter, meat, fish, poultry, some
in milk, legumes and egg

DTRCN: DEFICIENCY SIGNS:
.
DTRCN: 1) Pellagra = 4 D's, Dermatitis, Diarrhea, Dementia, and if not
treated Death.
.
DTRCN: 2) Anorexia
.
DTRCN: 3) Indigestion

DTRCN: TOXICITY: No real toxic effects but high doses can cause flushing,
tingling and possible throbbing in the head due to the vasodialation effect.

DTRCN: NOTE: Time Release Niacin can cause severe side effects, including
liver damage.
.
DTRCN: NOTE: Currently, research is being done to see if Niacin can help
lower wheezing in Asthma patients.\

DTRCN: OHA = 20 - 50 mg RDA = 20 mg

BDeGraz: Is timed released OTC item?

DTRCN: Yes and I am not sure if they are still selling it or not.

DTRCN: My understanding was it had to do with binders and the niacin.

BDeGraz: Can vitamins be taken with prescrption drugs?

DTRCN: Most usually, but my personal recommendation is to give some time
between. Just due to not all interactions are known and everyone is different .

MDr100686: My husband's vit. show a 30 mg of niacin. Does he need to take
an additional dosage?
DTRCN: Nope, the range is 30 - 50. With out reason, I would not add.

DTRCN: Again, I would encourage you to "feel" your vitamins........what is
she saying you ask? : )

DTRCN: I am saying if you feel good then it is working...........If you wish
to add a nutrient, do so cautiously and with lots of knowledge.
Add only one thing
for several days and keep a record of how you are feeling and try to notice any changes
and jot them down.

DTRCN: I usually ask, what good is taking them if you don't know how you
feel when they are working in your body.
.
DTRCN: That is also called getting in touch with your body.
.
DTRCN: PYRIDOXINE = B6
DTRCN: .
DTRCN: HISTORY: B6 is actually 3 closely related chemical compounds and no
symptom is yet associated with B6.
DTRCN: .
DTRCN: PROPERTIES: It is stable in heat and acid mediums, but is unstable
in alkaline mediums it is very unstable in light. Freezing Vegetables leads to a 20%
loss of B6

DTRCN: NOTE: If you take Pyridoxine supplements, you should take equal
amounts of Thiamin B1 and Riboflavin B2.

DTRCN: NOTE: Pyridoxine requires B2 for its normal function in the body.
A Vit C deficiency can cause increased excretion of B6 and then B6 deficiency which then
cause high excretion of calcium and magnesium and lowers copper absorption.
.
DTRCN: and this is a prime example of how nutrients interact to make you a
healthy or unhealthy if you become deficient.

DTRCN: FUNCTIONS:

DTRCN: B6 is involved in over 50 body functions.
.
DTRCN: 1) B6 forms coenzymes that assist in fat, protein, and carbohydrate
metabolism.

DTRCN: 2) B6 is necessary for the formation of heme (the iron containing
protion of hemoglobin) in red blood cells.
.
DTRCN: 3) It is essential for the formation and metabolism of Tryptophan
and the conversion of Tryptophan to Niacin.
.
DTRCN: 4) B6 aids in production of serotonin in the brain
.
DTRCN: 5) It is needed for Folic Acid metabolism, and proper absorpton of
B12.
.
DTRCN: 6) It aids in producing hormones insulin and adrenaline.

DTRCN: SOURCES: Liver, muscle meats, wheat germ, wheat bran, seeds, whole
grain cereals, and legumes (beans).

DTRCN: DEFICIENCY SIGNS:
.
DTRCN: 1) plays a role in some anemias

DTRCN: 2) can cause a decrease in the production of lymph cells which help
fight infections.
.
DTRCN: 3) may cause central nervous system problems
.
DTRCN: 4) Dermatitis

DTRCN: TOXICITY: very high doses may cause tingling, possible nerve
problems, sleepiness, which all go away when the dose is reduced. This is considered to be 10
times the OHA.
.
OHA = 10 - 50 mg RDA = 2 mg

DTRCN: NOTE: Research is currently being done to see if Low B6 plays a
role in kidney stone formation.
.
DTRCN: NOTE: They are also checking to see if Low B6 plays a role in
glucose intolerance and if it effects insulin production/release.

DTRCN: NOTE: They are trying to determine if B6 might help end asthma
attacks by lowering Histamine levels.

DTRCN: One thing, these are Water Soluble vitamins and they are not stored
in the body. So they must be replaced daily.

BDeGraz: Are there vitamins that are good for everyday type stress?

DTRCN: The B complex is good for stress................another side note:
.
DTRCN: The B- complex needs to be kept in balance..........taking one and not
all can put your body at great risk of causing a vitamin deficiency.

MDr100686: Taking all you mean to take the full dosage. every day ?

DTRCN: Yes, taking a multiple (which usually has an adequate dosage) then adding singles if you wish.
.
DTRCN: Such as:
DTRCN: My formula: 1 multiple Vit/Min, 2 B complex 50, 2 Antioxidants, and
Liq Vit C.

DTRCN: I take part in the morning and part in the evening.
.
DTRCN: I would like to address CU's straight back statement: the nutrients
that help bones being straight are Vit D, Vit A, Calcium, Magnesium but all
nutrients are needed.
DTRCN: The lack of Vit D can cause rickets in children but it causes
osteomalacia in adults which can cause the back to become bent.........but if you are talking
about curvature of the spine or scoliosis then if it is already apparent there is no real correction I
know of.

CURE432: what about Liq/Vit I thought the were better absorbed
.
DTRCN: Liquid vitamins can be absorbed by the mucosal lining of the mouth
but that is not the preferred way by the body. I take Liq C because for some
reason I do not do well with the pills.

MDr100686: My 3 yr old son takes poly visol liQ. Vit. should I give it to
him 2 or 3x's a day?

DTRCN: for right now I would give it as directed unless your Dr says
otherwise. For little ones, it is more important to start good eating habits now. Don't push
as you know, just offer.

BDeGraz: Why are other class messages on OUR Message Board?

DTRCN: because it is not OURS.............lol I hate that thing and so
do the others we are trying to get it changed

DTRCN: Next week finish B complex and Validity of Articles
